Starting to Ride a Motorcycle

Riding a motorcycle is fun. But when you’re a new rider, there is just a lot of information to take in. It shouldn’t be overwhelming, but these are all just to make sure you have a safe ride on the road before you twist the throttle for the first time. Here are some tips for first-time riders.

Check the Bike

This includes checking the brakes, the throttle, the mirrors, the tires, the clutch, and make sure everything is working perfectly. You don’t want to wait until an accident before you start checking your motorcycle’s condition.

Do a Walk Around

Whether it is a new or a used motorcycle, make sure you do a walk around with the salesman or the owner to show you how the bike works.

Gear Up

Wear a full face helmet, motorcycle accessories like jackets, riding gloves, sturdy boots, and a riding pants. Jeans are not recommended since they can shred if you fall.

Make Sure You Have Gas

Some bikes have fuel gauges, others don’t. Set a trip odometer on the bike to tell you when you need to start looking for a gas station. Don’t let your motorcycle die in the middle of the ride.

Go slow

Since motorcycles are lighter than cars, running 90 mph may feel like 45 mph. It can be deceiving so make sure to get comfortable with your motorcycle and take it easy.

Use hand signals

Sure, your motorcycle has its own signals, but they are tiny and sometimes, the switches are hard to use. Getting used to hand signals will make your ride safer.

The Bottomline

You can’t do anything about other people on the road, but you can control how you ride your bike. Sometimes you can just be doing perfectly fine until a car suddenly forgets you’re there. Being a first-timer can be overwhelming, but you shouldn’t forget that it should be fun as well.
