Taking your motorcycle out of storage after a long winter of keeping it stored in the garage can be so exciting! All you can think about is how awesome it’s going to feel when you finally get to hit the open road for the first time in months. This is especially true if you live in Las Vegas where riding a motorcycle hasn’t really been possible because we’ve been getting snow into late January! As your trusted Las Vegas motorcycle dealership and service team, we feel your pain! Luckily, Spring is just about here and it’s time to dust off your bike and go through this motorcycle maintenance checklist once again.
Replace and Top Off Oil and Gas
If you’ve gone more than six weeks without riding, then you need to be sure to drain old gas so that it doesn’t clog up your carbonator jets. Gasoline will evaporate over time and cause what’s left in the tank to thicken up which will cause issues with your engine. Ideally, you would want to drain the fuel in your bike before you put it in storage, but foresight isn’t always great. So before riding, be sure to replace the fuel in your bike and be sure to check the oil and top it off as well.
Check the Brakes
Next on your motorcycle maintenance checklist is making sure that your brakes are in perfect working condition. Over time, and especially in the cold, hoses and lines can crack so it’s important to make sure that they are in good condition. Take a look at the brake pads, brake lines, and brake fluid to make sure that you don’t need to replace anything before you go for your first ride of Spring.
Charge the Battery
Depending on how long it’s been since your last ride, you may find yourself in need of charging or replacing the battery on your motorcycle. Batteries are annoying because they will die quickly if you are not using them or if you leave them in the cold. Which usually means that they will need to be charged every time you pull them out of storage.
Inspect the Tires
Did you neglect your motorcycle all winter long? Your motorcycle’s tires may have deflated while in storage causing the weight of your bike to rest on flat tires. This, along with the cold, can cause issues with the tires. If you’re fortunate, your tires kept their pressure while in storage and you don’t have any issues! Be sure to inspect your tires every time before you go for a ride.
